We&#8217;ve been talking about Jane Austen together\nfor years, since I was first old enough to read her books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ellen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we&#8217;ve never done\na close reading and discussion together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Harriet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year the idea\noccurred to me to do this as a podcast. I&#8217;ve been really liking the close\nreading of the Harry Potter books in the <em>Harry\nPotter and the Sacred Text<\/em> podcast and I\u2019d also been enjoying the Jane\nAusten podcast, <em>First Impressions<\/em>.\nBut I couldn&#8217;t seem to find anyone doing a Jane Austen chapter by chapter\nreading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ellen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it seemed as if\nwe should just do our own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Harriet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then of course,\nwhile I was planning it, a new podcast called <em>The Daily Knightley<\/em> started. But even though they are also doing a\nreading of the novels, our approaches are quite different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ellen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I think there&#8217;s\na space in the world for several Jane Austen podcasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Harriet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we&#8217;re going to go\nthrough the novels, a few chapters at a time, and take a structured approach to\nour discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ellen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re going to talk\ngenerally about the chapters and then pick one character to examine closely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Harriet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then Ellen&#8217;s going\nto share her social historian\u2019s expertise and talk about the historical period,\nand I&#8217;m going to draw on my pop culture appreciation by talking about the\nadaptations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ellen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve decided to\nstart with <em>Pride and Prejudice<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Harriet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I thought about\ndoing them in publication order, and following her growth as an author, but\nthat doesn&#8217;t really work unless we start with the juvenilia. And even if we\nstuck with full length novels, while I love <em>Sense\nand Sensibility<\/em>, it has some issues that I think we can explore more\nfruitfully after we&#8217;ve gone through Pride and Prejudice in detail. We&#8217;ve\ndivided the book up into 10 paths, and we&#8217;re hoping to put an episode out every\ncouple of weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ellen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So with our first\nproper episode, we&#8217;ll be looking at chapters one to six of <em>Pride and Prejudice<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Harriet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m looking forward to it.
